Syros Hotels

Whenever we come to Syros our first hotel choice is the Hotel Hermes. Unfortunately it is not always available, being very popular with the lawyers, accountants, and all the people who have to come to Syros to do business, since it is the capital of the Cyclades Islands.

Hotel Hermes

Hermes Hotel, HermoupolisIn 1963 I came to Greece with my family when my father was teaching at the University of Athens. We spent the month of August in Hermoupolis, Syros. It was my first taste of Greece and left a huge impression on me. We lived in the Hermes Hotel. The hotel was in a unique position facing a small square on the waterfront of the harbor on a narrow peninsula so that out the back was a small pebble beach where we would swim every day. Our breakfasts were always eaten in the hotel dining room where I first tasted orange marmalade, and occasionally we would have dinner at the restaurant, just because it was easier for my parents who had 4 kids of who I was the oldest at 9. But for that month the Hotel Hermes was our home, the longest period I have ever spent in a hotel to this day.

Hermes Hotel BeachSince then I have gone back to Syros, in the seventies with my parents and then in the nineties and into the next century with my family and whenever we go our first hotel choice is the Hermes. Unfortunately it is not always available, being very popular with the lawyers, accountants, and all the people who have to come to Syros to do business, since it is the capital of the Cyclades Islands. So I have also experienced other hotels, some more fancy than the Hermes, maybe even superior hotels. But with the exception of the Kyma Pension next door, no hotels can you have a view of the Hermoupolis harbor and walk out back and go swimming. The Hotel Hermes offers elegant accommodation with free Wi-Fi, a palm-tree garden and features a restaurant and snack-bar with views of the Aegean Sea. All rooms are air-conditioned and open to a private balcony or patio, some of them with sea views. Fitted with marble or wooden floors, they have a seating area, TV and fridge. Each private bathroom has a bathtub or shower and hairdryer. Guests at Hermes can start their day with a buffet breakfast. Greek and international dishes are served in the restaurant. There is also a snack bar for light meals, coffee and drinks. In terms of location, and the fact that it has its own beach, the Hermes Hotel can't be beat as far as staying in Hermoupolis goes. Hotel Syrou Melathron

Syrou MelathronHoused in a historic building dating back to the 19th century, Syrou Melathron is located among the other mansions in Vaporia, near the Asteria Bay above what is essentially the town beach which is about a 2 minute walk to from the room we had here. A rooftop terrace, elegant accommodations and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel are offered. The carefully restored neoclassic hotel boasts roof paintings, wooden structures and impressive decorative elements. Rooms at the Syrou Melathron are comfortable and well equipped with modern comforts including a private bathroom, minibar and air conditioning. In the elegant hotel lounge guests can enjoy a drink or a coffee. In the Galaxy Terrace guests can enjoy breakfast and panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the picturesque port of Syros. The hotel also features a 24-hour front desk and conference room. Laundry service is available upon request. If the Hotel Hermes is full this would be my second choice. Hotel Diogenes

Diogenes Hotel SyrosWe have wanted to stay here ever since it was a lowly 2-star hotel, because if its location right on the waterfront where the ferries come and because in the 19th century it was a bordello, as were several other old waterfront hotels. The nearest beach is 250 meters away. Combining traditional elements with modern decor, all en suite rooms are elegantly furnished and harmoniously coloured. Some have views of the city and the sea, others see part of the city, while others see more quiet cobbled streets. Diogenis has a breakfast room that can also be used for small conferences or exhibitions. The hotel’s cafeteria serves snacks, coffee and drinks 24 hours each day. For hotels and transportation visit any of these agencies who all handle bookings on the island, car rentals, ferries and flights. I recommend them especially if you are including Syros with another island so they can coordinate hotels and ferries:
Fantasy Travel at www.fantasytravelofgreece.com
Aegean Thesaurus at www.greecetravel.com/aegean
Dolphin Hellas Travel at www.greecetravel.com/dolphinhellas

The best islands to combine with Syros are Mykonos and Tinos. Syros is the island of commerce. Tinos is the religious island. Mykonos is the party island. If you do all three you will have covered all the bases, especially if you throw in a daytrip to Delos which is the island with the richest history.

For hotels see Booking.com's Syros Pages or check out the Hotel Hermes in Hermoupolis where I stay whenever I go. You can't beat the location in the harbor and there is a beach in the back. If you want to stay outside of Hermoupolis see the Hotel Blue Sky on the beach at Galissas which is recommended by my pal Sakis at the Hotel Attalos in Athens who spent 2 weeks there.

Ferries returning from Syros are often returning from Tinos and Mykonos and are usually crowded. It would not hurt to arrange a taxi transfer for your arrival if you have a lot of luggage. Otherwise the boats dock pretty close to the Pireaus Metro Station.
