There are many available during the summer months and in the off season at a variety of prices. Generally they are not cheap until you factor in the number of people who can live in a house and compare it to what you would pay for several rooms in a hotel. Then renting a house or a villa makes a lot of sense, especially for an extended period of time.

Because Hydra is so close to Athens and there are a number of foreigners living on the island it is an excellent place to base yourself if you want to spend a year in Greece, or if you want to test the waters to see if you like it enough to move here. While many islands are literally dead in the winter, life in Hydra seems to continue but at a slower pace.
